My 2010 and my current 2013 Edge both had front strut problems. Made a popping sound going over bumps and stopping and starting. Replaced them on both vehicles. Found out all I would have had to replace was the top mounts. Upon disassembly, found the bearings out in the mounts.
That's the way mine was also. Those bearings are very light duty and apparently driving on gravel roads makes them wear out sooner. Maybe they are built differently on the newer models.
