Subject: RE: Appropriate age to drive tractor

Cleveland, MS. Own small farm near Booneville, MS

I started at 8 but as someone else noted, I had a few years of experience sitting in Dad's lap before that. Of course, most equipment was a lot smaller and simpler then than it is now. My early experience was on JD 520, 3010, and 4010. I never got to drive a tractor rated over 100 hp until I was in my mid-teens (9000 Ford). I did most of our tillage (disk, do-all, turning plow, etc.) and most of our spraying and cultivating through my teen years. Almost all equipment was 4 row except for sprayer (8 row and later 12 row). I would say a lot depends on how much time you spend teaching him.
