The biggest factor for me would be the coldness of the floor.   Take the carpet out of the hallway and try it to see if you like the colder floors.   Would like to have hardwood but kind of defeats the purpose if you have to have area rugs so it's not as cold.  I vote carpet, you live in North Dakota, right
