Refinish the maple. It's a forever floor. Use large area rugs for kids/grand kids to play on. They are easy to replace when faded or dirty. Small soft rug beside the bed for the wife to step on when she gets up.
+1 Moisture/wet boots are not easy on wood flooring. Use lots of throw rugs/area rugs to "break the monotony of all wood."
the first 40 years this house had floors you could not let get wet
Then they invented urethane finishes
three, monster dogs, a few accidents
snow on shoes, floor is perfect, to have a safe home, for allergy, control
