The newer high efficiency "condensing" furnaces control the draft to a minimum and usually use something like a 3" PVC pipe.

I expect a large combustion air inlet duct is just a way to loose a lot of heat from the house.

Now if you mean a return duct system that helps even out circulation of air inside the house, it all depends on how the house is laid out and the ductwork is run. You might find that eliminating most of the system results in cold areas of the house because air simply does not circulate well.

Are the return? ducts within the insulated envelope of the house? If so, there is little loss possible. If they are run through attic or crawl space, outside of the insulated space, they are potentially a large source of loss!
