North Central Illinois | Based on rough estimates, about half of the rye residue disappeared over the summer. I hadn't originally planned to bale the remaining residue, but I was short on bedding, and trying to figure out how to pay the carbon penalty since N options for next year's organic corn are limited.
It indeed would be interesting to inventory the earthworm populations. I know that they are reduced in the tillage years, compared to the sod areas, but they seem to rebound relatively quickly. In 4 years, the population has increased quite a bit on the formerly conventionally farmed ground. | |
