Subject: RE: Largest man made explosion before Atomic bomb

Ships full of ammonium nitrate blew up during both world wars and did major damage in Italy, Canada, and Texas. Ammonium nitrate was the standard explosive in artillery shells if both wars. There was also a major ammonium nitrate explosion in northern Germany where a troop trying to empty a train car (ammonium nitrate is hygroscopic, and gets lumpy and sticks to containers) with dynamite and blew away a whole town.
