Couldn't you accomplish that buy doing foreword contracts for harvest delivery?

Keep in mind the guy asking that just might have done about everything wrong in marketing this year!

You can for sure. There are other ways to market grain without bins.

For the record, I think bins are worth the money and an important tool in a farm operation, but when guys say the can 'get 0.40 more for 6 months storage, its a no brainer!' they are farming gross dollars. On corn right now the money will cost you at least 0.10. Electricity 0.05, extra time and handling 0.05-0.10 (depends on bin size) vs leaving it on the truck off the combine. Then pay yourself 0.10 for bin rent to cover wear and tear, taxes and depreciation.

A 0.40 carry for 6 months in this situation leaves you a whopping 0.05-0.10 a bushel. And you have the risk of damage and over drying the bottom 1/3.

Again I am not anti bins, but it ain't all roses if a guy is honest with himself.

geeez your not going to make any money if you count all expenses! jk I agree with what you say, some forward sell the carry, others hold and sell 9 months later at a price they could have had at harvest if they would have forward sold it, then claim victory because its "x" over the harvest low. the bin paid!

I have bins, to me its worth it just for convenience, but sometimes bins can be a negative, to easy to just stick it away and put off marketing. bins are a tool but take extra management, its not a slam dunk no brainer.
