because if you have one scrap guy on your property, you should just give all your iron to him for his "trouble", but if you take it to an auction, you will witness first hand what territorial iron men do, and that is bid each other up past the point of profit.
Plus, if you have a tire that you dont want, if someone gives a dollar to try to put it on something of theirs or make a cow feeder out of, you just saved yourself a disposal fee.
