True, but once the prime mover (diesel engine) quits, the whole thing grinds to a halt.
What the railroads have yet to figure out is how to transfer the energy from one train in dynamic braking to another climbing a grade. That would be a real technological accomplishment beyond solar fields at night or windmills when the wind is calm.
