Subject: RE: alfalfa hay

“These are the times that try men's souls.”
I try and feed 1st crop to dairy, 2nd to feeder calves, 3rd to dairy. Try to keep all off test, rained on, etc. for beef cows and bulls 1st. though 2nd crop. All 3rd. crop goes to dairy even if it gets rained on. Only way I feed 3rd. here to beef cows is if it sits for a year and takes some of the potency out of it. We even try and cut all 2nd. crop with a lot bloom on it to try and keep from bloating calves on it.

I've got a few beef guys in the valley always wanting me to trade the off or rained on hay for their high test 3rd. because they don't want to feed it to their beef cows, and they don't want to sell to brokers or it is in round bales. So I'm able to trade up in quality sometimes to help my dairy out. Helps them, and helps me.
