Fontanelle, IA | Pardon my stupidity or pure ignorance.... But why would an upstate NY Simmental guy "import" heat tolerant breed from Texas to breed simmy cows to make replacements? Does this guy put all the calves and cows in a temp controlled building to keep out cold stress? Is he feeding out all the steers and heifers and selling them into a certain ethnic locker/butcher? Did this producer try to AI a few cows first, liked the results, and then jumped whole hog.
The dock on those "eared" cattle would kill a cow-calf man "here" in the sale barn. Feedlot might make a fortune feeding those simmy/Brahman cross calves.... But cow-calf farmer definitely wouldn't.
