Cullom, Illinois | I've planted wheat late enough you couldn't row it till green up next spring and it had good yield. I'd recommend raising your seeding rate 10%. And seeding conditions are even more critical. Meaning it needs to be dry and relatively warm the week after you plant. Fall growth rarely correlates to yield and too much leads to heaving over winter. I suggest buying Needham's book on wheat. Nitrogen application can be critical to spring growth and tillering. Good tillering can save a weak stand but you have to manage the nitrogen correctly. | |
