KY | Amen to that. People in big field country don't understand our 10,20,30 acre fields surrounded by trees on three, sometimes 4 sides. I have a 50 acre farm that's split into 4 pieces, and one 10 acre bottom is long and narrow, woods on one side, wooded creek bank on the other. About 10 rows on either side grow half a crop because of the shade, and the very back of the field that's surrounded by trees on 3 sides, the deer keep a good 1-2 acres nibbled down to almost nothing all season. That's 20%, so it's a big deal. Easy answer is leave that 2 acre back corner to grass and save the seed and fert, but then they're going to move inward to the first acre or two planted and then you've just upped it to 30+% they're hurting. |
