I would go for the trimmer route first. Wahle peanut does an alright job and isn’t expensive. It will do good sizing your residue before making your finishing pass.
For finishing use a good lather. If you have sensitive skin try to find a cream instead of a foam/gel. Foam and gel all have tiny air bubbles in them and that doesn’t give you even protection on the skin. (Air ride is not good “here”)
One common issue some people have is razor bumps. This is especially common for black men. (Hair curls before growing out of the skin). If you have uneven emergence of hair try a single or double blade. These do not cut the hair as close to or below the surface as bad as the 3-6 bladed razors.
Again the direction you shave will also dictate the closeness of your final pass. Against the grain for closer shave and with the grain for comfortable shave.
Your residue will now have been properly preped and you will be ready for Your ol’ Lady to plant a big wet one on your NAT approved face.

Don’t forget to leave a residual behind for further management. Oil, lotion, astringent, and or sunscreen all offer peace of mind during the growing season.

If you are a true Nebraskan...
wipe your buck knife on your pant leg and get to shaving that brush down. Against the grain and dry is the only way any self respecting cornhusker should go about things.
Get er’ done!
