Subject: Corn following cereal rye, what did we do wrong?

Trenton, KY
I live in Trenton, KY and we farm in a no-till corn, wheat and dc soybean rotation. Last fall we drilled a 181.5 acre field in cereal rye following double crop soybeans, we didn't fertilize the rye during the winter or after it broke dormancy in the spring. We also drilled (2) 120' wide strips across another field to check the yield impact of rye ahead of corn. We killed the 181.5 acre field except for a 60' pass 10 days ahead of planting, and in the other field with rye in 120' strips we killed everything but one 60' pass. We started the planter straddling the edge of the green in each field, so we could check the yields accordingly.

Fertility:
Both of these fields have medium high fertility, and soil O.M. levels of 2%. We spread 150 lbs. of Dap and 100 lbs. of Potash a couple days before planting. At V3 we used a knife injection rig to side-dress 143 lbs of N using 32% UAN, giving us a total of 170 lbs. of N / Acre.

Tissue Testing:
I tissue tested weekly in the rye and in a regular dc soybean field, beginning at 383 GDU's and took the last samples at 2,678 GDU's, and the corn black layered at 2,730 GDU's by the next week when I would have normally sampled. All of our N content levels fell each week through the whole year, beginning at +/- 5% and ending at 1.4-1.7%, and the last month we had N deficiencies showing up more and more, and by black layer we had the inverted "V" all the way up to the ear. So, regardless of in rye or out we weren't getting a passing grade.

The Results:
We averaged right at 20 bushels / Acre less where we had rye cover crop, compared to regular dc soybean stubble ground. A very interesting find was that the green strips averaged 3.5, 11, and 12.3 bushels / Acre more than the 8 row passes down each side that were in killed rye.

We were hoping we'd be happy with the corn following rye and that we'd drill everything in beans in cereal rye this fall, but now we're at a standstill. What do we do to get on the right track?

Thanks in advance for all replies!
