Subject: Accidentally invoking alternate keyboard

Near Intersection of I-35 & I-90 Southern Mn.
I have an older HP Envy computer with a serial keyboard. Twice in the last week, I have accidentally invoked an alternate keyboard. When this happens, the top row of keys become locked to their symbol equivalents as if the shift key is permanently on. A large letter "A" appears lit above the speaker buttons above the numeric keypad. Other keys have different meanings than normal.

I'm fairly certain that I am hitting some keystroke combination which causes this to happen. If so, there should be a keystroke combination to "undo" this but I haven't found it.

The only solution I've found is to shutdown the computer completely and then restart it. What's the trick?
