Reading these responses and there are perks to each ot them. Maybe a combo of all of them.

A nice letter to said auctioneer detailing his unprofessional conduct in a public setting.

An even more detailed reminder of what defamation of character is and the financial issues with said lawsuit.

How his business and reputation can also be affected by recanting of truthful and witnessed accounts of his unprofessional behavior.

How one might stop the oncoming lawsuit by suddenly having the desire to recant an off accusation in a proper fashion, such as a public apology.

Even an idiot should be able to figure out that he's likely in hot water....Ego or not, he may think a lot more quickly from now on.

If you bring on the heat quickly and directly, he may realize he will need to shut his mouth unless he has proof.

There is some value for forgiving him but your character is all you have, don't let someone who has a bad one out a spot on yours.
