There are lots of info and videos on the web on how to do what you are contemplating. You can also just use new 2x4's if you want. I would buy a metal detector if you are using reclaimed wood so you can find hidden metal fasteners. They also make a thick heavy clear finish made for bar and counter tops. A planer or big fixed drum sander sure would make this a easier project.
