Belts are supposed to flex rather than stretch nowadays.  I imagine they feel they can get longer life out of this design rather than have a chain/sprocket setup that people like to lubricate ---->which then attracts more dust and contaminants -----> which then causes shortened life of the chain.  Metal on metal contact causes accelerated wear too.  Belt to steel contact will probably nearly eliminate that wear meaning the pulleys will last longer too

The thing about change is that just because it didn't work before doesn't mean it won't ever work...I imagine some lessons have been learned in the last 37 years
