The laptop or other device needs to have hardware compatible with this to work. I have the Microsoft wireless display adapter on my Samsung, and it's nice. The tv acts like a projector or second monitor but doesn't need any wires to do this.

My phone and my laptop work to connect, but my tablet doesn't. It's kind of cool to project my phone's display onto a tv, to be honest!
