Subject: RE: First time dog owner, question

Lancaster, OH
Pit Bulls can be some of the best dogs around. Petey on Little Rascals was also a Pit.

I've found the putting pressure on toes is the best way. Tell them "Down" and if they do not respond, put pressure on the toes with the word "Down" applying more pressure until they are down. It will take some time but will work.

I would not recommend the slap to the nose as this will create a wariness of your hands.

We've had very cooperative and very spirited dogs. The most important thing is that you be very consistent in your expectations, your commands and punishments. The dog will learn very quickly who is in charge and what your expectations are so that they can be part of your "pack." Difficulties come with inconsistencies or not interacting with them. I think it is best with a puppy that you keep them with you as much as you can so that they bond very tightly.

Best wishes.
