While I have never checked, I don't think the amp draw is that different. Both work fine if you run both the power and ground wires directly to the battery terminals. The problem was that a poor connection any where will cause problems with an electric steer. When the motor turns it takes too much current from the electronics and they don't function properly. I don't recall ever having trouble with power on an EZ Pilot with the cable to the battery, day or night. Should not have problem with an EZ Steer if powered to the battery either.
