I have seen and used this trick myself on various connectors where the manufacturer apparently does not think that a dust cap is necessary since they don't make one. Ag Leader does this themselves and sometimes includes them. Sometimes a single pin or socket is used and attached to a tie band so the dust cap and be tied on so it doesn't get lost when not in use.
