Maybe.......couple things working FOR you.

One is the nitrates are usually a lot higher in the lower stalk. The cattle most likely will start mostly with the tops and leaves and only work their way down if forced to.

Two is they can get somewhat acclimated to the high nitrate so they can stand what would kill one that was turned out on it cold turkey and hungry.

Working against it being safe.....the nitrates are stable in the standing dry stalks and you never know what they may eat in response to weather changing etc. Might be getting along just fine and a weather system come through and upset things.

I would hand cut stalks from all over the field, hand chop or shred somehow and send off a sample for testing. It might be REALLY expensive feed if you kill some cattle.
