Subject: Perspective: Scouting my crops in Brookings/Moody Counties SoDak

EC SoDak
Finished up in the sprayer, thought I'd check a few fields, haven't had much time to wander in the corn. They look better than I thought they would for no rain in a month until the last week. We are in full blown pollination now so the moisture came at a good time. Corn was planted April 23rd before the snow/rain cold snap, ears were from 24 rows in with a 102 day Dekalb. Beans were planted May 10th to a 1.8 Asgrow. The last corn pics were planted 4/22 to a 100 day Dekalb. For the other side of the spectrum where my fields are more variable with lighter soils which can range from the first corn field, to light, to sand that the corn died weeks ago, its variable here even. In these areas, corn may be 4-6'. These are the fields I've been really hoping for the rain to hit, they have to be spoon fed rain every week, that month of hot and no rain really took its toll. Thought I'd share to give some perspective on the variability that SoDak will have this year. Chatting with a few people who do the 65 mph window crop checking say between Brookings and Sioux Falls is about as good as they've seen in the relative area, time will tell.
