“These are the times that try men's souls.”
Well my cattle, feed price indicators are telling prices are headed up on everything I use now. Just had another fire take off late yesterday afternoon. Had a ranch that we run with call me said he watched lighting start this one in two places on our winter range again. This time on the west side of the allotment. So they took their water truck and grader, my boys and myself and another neighbor I picked up went to run shovels. Water truck and us got their first, but we waited for grader to cut a line. Just about that time county trucks got there, then a chopper showed up with a water bucket. They held this one to about 66 acres. But the big one to the south of us was just getting rolling at over 2,000 acres. When we left the north end fire boss he thanks us and ranch grader and water truck for showing up. We got the heck out of there to let them do their jobs. They had heavy pumpers, and air tankers as they still had a hour or two to fly. Also these two patrols you see in the snow, one stuck and the other pulling him were on the fire on the south. This two pics of the snow is were the fire is on the south end. Talk about from snow to fire all in one year.

So as it stands we have burn all three sides of our winter range in Utah. We have been lucky to keep all fires very small in Idaho side. But side have 60 days of fire season. I don't know what game plan is now for grazing, just have to see what happens. I'm betting we will have to sell down cows for several ranches. Problem is really not a lot of places we can feed these cows. As most of our winter feeding areas are already maxed out now. There is no feeding hay on public lands. This is winter grazing so it can be grazed until green up in March. But it all depends on Feds. they may want to lock all gazing off. Which is foolish, but policy is policy when dealing with Gov. Will be interesting how this will all play out.
