Iowa
Here's a map of Iowa http://www.iowadnr.gov/Conservation/Wildlife-Stewardship/Iowa-Wildl...

Very Very generally speaking:

Desmoines lobe- think flatter farms/long straight rows/less pasture/more ponds and standing water in a wet year/drainage ditches and big tile that goes a lot farther to get an outlet.

South and to the west of the desmoines lobe- think hills/more pasture and trees/contours/waterways/ terraces/way more no-till/ kind of place section control and row shutoffs pay back fast. Ground is capable of producing good just has more character.

As to what is better- I'd say it depends on the weather that year.
Can't speak much for the east side as I don't go there much.
