A thought that crossed my mind about grid vs zone sampling, distances, etc is when the product is being applied I bet most are a 90 foot pattern (commercially). So what really is the benefit of having a sample in one small area unless it is that wide? Unless you are doing something like deep banding with the new montag where you can run different rates over the width of the machine?
