Subject: RE: John Deere's Master Plan

Being involved in many of these AgGateway meetings and literally being part of the committees to create ADAPT I'll say this, ADAPT is a good thing for this industry and actually will help the farmers better retrieve the data they want when they want in an easier fashion. The basis behind it was that the Foddum Ted Macy (from Mapshots) created while needed at the time was lacking in its ability to evolve and be supported, especially with the ever changing requirements on technology. ADAPT would be an evolving standard in how data of all sorts (starting with planting, then harvest, then application, transportation, storage, and so on) can be shared among any and all systems. Currently, many groups like Deere, or whomever had their own proprietary formats made it hard to transfer from one to the other. They did this so that you buy all of their products naturally. Deere started the problem and now figured out lets be the first to adopt ADAPT and help create it so that they'll be first to market and be the "good guy" by saying its easier to transfer data. The kicker is their goal is to make it easier for farmers to transfer their data to them to do well whatever they do. This is the case with a lot of the major companies involved in AgGateway but things have settled down more because money in ag is less and it is actually a lot of work to get multiple organizations together while technically creating the specs needed for others to implement. From personal hands on experience there is about 5-10 people from different groups creating the technical standard that will be accepted by most everyone in the next few years. Some are ahead of others. ADAPT opens up the sharing world by making it easier to understand. I always compared it to APPLE vs Microsoft systems or if you want Pioneer Hydraulic couplers. There needs to be a standard so that if a grower chooses they can move data from where, when, and how they want. Old systems don't accommodate for this well as most know. The bad thing is that some will take advantage of this easier method once adopted. A necessary evil as I'd call it but one that will happen so it is in the best interest of growers and service providers to learn what it is about and how to become involved with AgGateway to accommodate the needs and concerns that they may have.
