I was in the Navy on destroyer and Never and i repeat Never did a vessel get within one half mile and we were full alert. Every second there is 2 forward lookouts, the officier of the deck in charge of the birdge has binoculars, and the radar room has at least 4 sometimes 6 screens checking every inch.  Someone was asleep on the Fitzgerald.  Hope im wrong.

+1, a USA naval ship is aware of all other ships in the area. They have many forms of radar, sonar
and much more.

This is a big embarrassment to the Navy. That Ship Captain will be discharged quickly.

Even though he was probably asleep, the Captain was responsible for making sure the O.O.D. (Officer of the Deck) was trained and could do the job. I feel sorry for the Capt in a way, he gets his career terminated for a dumb**** guy;s screwup. AND I see he got banged up pretty bad in the collision, was sent to a hospital.
