I was in the Navy on destroyer and Never and i repeat Never did a vessel get within one half mile and we were full alert. Every second there is 2 forward lookouts, the officier of the deck in charge of the birdge has binoculars, and the radar room has at least 4 sometimes 6 screens checking every inch.  Someone was asleep on the Fitzgerald.  Hope im wrong.

It had to be a major screw up by the "officer" steering the ship. Sure it was dark, but radar and lookouts would have this nailed. There ought to be some Navy personel in jail over this.
