C IL | Anyone a sailor? Lots of unanswered questions from this uninformed guy:
Early stories indicate the RH vessel has right of way. So is the destroyer at fault, even though it was struck and not doing the striking?
Do international maritime 'rules' (who enforces?) require someone to be on the bridge (of the container ship) when underway?
How does a freighter sneak up on a destroyer? Radar? Sonar? Automatic tracking (like flightaware). Heavy seas? Fog? Nighttime lighting on a ship? Not an inquest here, just wondering what happens in the real world.
The article references the freighter autopilot should have detected the destroyer somehow and notified crew members. How does that work? Bells, alarms, warning lights?
How big of a crew does a freighter have and does someone have a watch at all times? My great-uncle was a bachelor merchant mariner but he was gone before I arrived. | |
