We have been building our ridges with John Deere auto steer on SF1 for several years, and are pretty happy. It works as long as you park the machine in its tracks any time you stop for more than a couple minutes and then zero the line to where your at before starting again. We get pretty straight and well spaced ridges with that method. You definitely won't be able to auto steer on the same rows again, though. To much drift with SF1. If you were cultivating, for example, you'd have to drive the tractor manually.

I'm not sure on pricing. However, as another postrr alluded to, with John Deere at least, it's the activations as much or more than the hardware that gets you.

I wouldn't say it couldn't be done within 5 to 10 inches with a light bar, especially if you're used to driving with markers. My only light bar experience is on a bouncy old litter truck, and it's hard to dinner that thing in a straight line regardless of what you're aiming at.
