Back In KS | I'm working on an old NH 359 Mix-Mill. We were planning on just replacing the worn out tapered roller bearings and seals on the hammer mill shaft, but after looking at the picture in the parts books I've got a snap ring missing on the fan end of the shaft and am confused by it's function.
"21" (pn 263786) in the attached diagram is described as an external snap ring for a 1.875" shaft. There wasn't any such snap ring on our shaft when it came apart and I don't see any groove on the shaft where such an ext. snap ring would seat.
Anyone have any experience on with this assembly? I understand the int. snap ring that keeps the bearings set inside the cast housing, but am struggling to understand the function of the external one right near the diameter "step" on the shaft. That combined with the fact it wasn't anywhere to be found when we took it apart.
Would appreciate any wisdom or insight....
