Subject: SUNFLOWERS - Can they be watered up?

Lots of posts say - Sunflowers don't like rain before emerging. Why not? Do the seeds rot? Do the Roots rot? Or what?

What if - about 2/3 of the seeds landed right on top of moisture - those are sprouting, fine...

and 1/3 landed .25" above moisture...Should these be watered up? Or just forgotten? The moisture Saturation underneath was OK, but nothing extra......(All seeds covered nicely and firmly, with fine dry soil).... After 2 days, moisture has not soaked up to seed......

Soil is Richfield/Spearville/Ulysses......Loam....

Now what? Seed was dropped at 26,000, on 30" rows. Some dry spots are 36" long, down the row.....

It's temptin to run sprinkler at .25"........ Maybe even twice, or 3 times..... until all shoots emerge...

Bad Idea?

Forecast is for 95 degrees x 6 days........

Do sunflowers have secondary roots that originate from stem tissue outside of the seed? aka "adventitious roots", and "nodal roots"? Do those require moisture ABOVE seed level? (Like corn?)
