The DJI phantoms are very easy to fly. They are about 1k but I had absolutely no fear of crashing it from the get go with no drone experience. I'd think practicing with a cheap one might make you even more nervous when deciding whether or not to upgrade to a more expensive one. You can change the settings but on the DJI I think the standard setting is a warning at 30%. It also has a nice fly home button where it'll automatically remember its take off point and it'll come down right there. Also on whatever you choose to fly it with (phone, iPad, etc) in the app that you fly it with in the right top corner it'll constantly show what % of battery your drone has remaining. They generally fly 15-20 minutes and the furthest away I've flown mine was about a mile.
