Have you ever had one go totally bad? I've never seen one that was a "total failure", just several that did weird intermittent things like this that go away with a replacement.
I hate test driving that kind of repair. You never know how long to operate before declaring victory, as you don't know if you fixed it or the intermittent issue is just lying in remission...
