Well, went back out, removed the breather fitting, checked it, it appeared Ok. Tried adding oil, oil added fine, added about a pint, level came up to show in the sight glass. Closed the system and ran the tractor.
I guess this was just the first time I noticed the oil in the filler fitting and I just misinterpreted it.
