Subject: 9 speed shifting short cut

Statesville, NC
I have a new to me truck. '93 IH single axle tractor, with a 9 speed. It is geared 4.33 and the transmission has overdrive with a normal shift pattern. It has a "B" gearset, which is a little wider ratios. With no load, and starting level or slightly down hill, I start in 3rd gear (numbering the gears 1-5, not L-4). When I start, I flip the range to hi, and go back to 1 position (mystery gear, not marked on shift pattern). Then on to 2, 3, 4, 5. I'm a math and numbers person, and like to look at a chart of the actual ratios for each gear before driving a different truck. On the 9 speed, the shift from 1-2 is a lot more difference than any other gears, that's why you don't normally use it in high range. I discovered the shift from 3 low to 1 high was about the same ratio step, so I thought I would try it to save shifting one gear with light or no load. It works very well for me. I just give it a little longer pause between the first two shifts.
