Getting some high phosphorous readings.......need to start fixing...... we will/are planting soybeans directly into live cover----cereal rye now........ and hope to plant corn into live cover crop probably next year. Therefore need a cover crop ahead of each that does what we need.......and ALSO helps remove phosphorous. With that in mind................ Oats appears to be a good candidate. 1. If we let oats continue to grow......and planted corn into it........would the oats "fight" with the corn like supposedly cereal rye and corn do? I assume that the biggest problem would be oats is a grass. 2. Instead of using oats in front of corn.........how about spring or fall-planted red mammoth clover? Does red mammoth have properties where it would help minimize the phosphorous problem? We use cover crops currently as a weed control device FIRST, and secondarily as a soil benefiting procedure. Our recent soil tests indicate that we now need to consider minimizing the phosphorous.........so might need to adjust the specific covers which we will use.......but the overall objectives remain the same. What say you? Thanks. |
