I mostly did a no-till garden for a long time. I put up permanent beds that were never walked on or tilled. The only tillage it got was digging the potatoes, carrots and leeks. I did try to rotate crops and ran all the plant residue to through a compost shredder. Tomato and potato vines went into the garbage because of disease carryover issues. I also had a drip irrigation tape that went down the center of each bed. Plastic mulch was used for things that like heat like tomatoes and cucumbers.
