If you can just use a paper towel to wipe it out, that's great. I have had mine in water and, yes, occasionally have used soap on it. If I do feel like I need some water/soap to get it cleaned up, then I re-oil it and put it in a warm oven for a bit. If it's a little rusty the next time I want to use it, I just wipe it out with a paper towel and then use it. A little rust isn't a problem. I'd rather that than bits of old, burned food.
