WC Iowa | This is going to sound like nonsense, but we improved our water infiltration rate when we quit using anhydrous for the nitrogen fertilizer. I used to think the NH3 equals hard ground stories were just that, but we have improved our soils. We have also added a small grain year to the rotation and under seeded it with clover. There is something about the small grain roots mixed with the clover roots that changes the soil.
