Subject: RE: Replant Corn

S Illinois
Rot/suffocation. Local crop insurance agency says S IL is the replant capital of the US. What we have is highest rain rate for our area for year during planting season. 90% of the time it is wet April 1st and from that date to Memeorial Day we average 10in of rain. Combine this with extremely slow/ poor infiltration rates and the ground just sits full of water for days after rain events. It's sort of like trying to plant a crop in a 5 gallon bucket full of dirt. Good if it is on the dry side, but saturate things and the crop emergence turns ugly fast. So what we usually get is a day or two of running after a rain event and then the next 1-2 in rain comes through and the cycle starts again.

It is also tough to relate to planting depth questions from other locations especially concerning beans because if we try to go much deeper than 1.5 in, replant is almost guaranteed. Especially if trying to plant before late May when the weather starts to dry out/higher evaporation rates.

Edit: heat will actually rot the seed faster than any cold could. Those days planting in June when its 85 and then that 2 in rain comes will rot seed in a matter of a day or two.
