I had my helper replace the plug-in on the alternator. Well there was a 50/50 chance to get it right, but guess what? He switched the wires around so the no.1 terminal got the juice and the 2 terminal got the key switch.

What component in the alternator got fried?

Nothing in the alternator should have been harmed. The only thing reversing the #1(wire that starts the charging process when energized)-#2 (wire that is always hot where the alternator senses system voltage) wires is that it keeps the alternator always excited, about a 2-3 amp drain when parked which will kill the battery in about 24 hours. Put them back on with switched power to #1 and constant power to #2, all should be OK.
