Subject: What causes crop in tractor tracks to emerge faster? Pic.

SE Wyoming
Anyone know what causes this?

Barley planted 3-27-17.

John Deere 1830 hoe drill. 12.5 in spacing. 450lb standards. Steel press wheels. Good points. 100 lbs per acre. Tractor is 9470R with 710-70R 42 tires at 12 psi. 1910 has 28l-26 tires at 25 psi.

Ground is edible bean stubble. Disced twice, and finished with a field cultivator, then planted.

The wheel tracks emerged first, and are rapidly out pacing the other rows. I am pretty certain it's not a depth problem, this drill usually tears through the tracks like a champ. This year it's different. Have had slow/poor emergence in the tracks, but never this.

Am I wrong in thinking that there was greater seed to soil contact where the tracks are packed down?

Any thoughts?

Edit to add: Cart is a tow-between 1910.
Thank you.
