central pa | Have been grazing rye/triticale/wheat mix for a week now. Cows are loving it. The first week in have them 5 acres in an odd shaped field, did it the lazy way. Now I have them in a rectangular 7 acre field. 29 pairs with month old calves and 3 late calvers. Give them an acre a day and they are very content. The rye is just starting to head out. I'm not worried about regrowth as it will get burned off and plant silage corn as soon as we can get steer manure hauled. Have grass ready to start grazing. It sure works nice to start the grazing season about 2 weeks ahead and let the grass get going. Always a good feeling when you know you are done feeding hay for a winter.
Picture of the house is to show what we are surrounded by on 2 sides. Makes a guy envious of you boys out west in the wide open spaces!!!!
Last 2 pictures are yearling heifers I'm keeping back for replacements.
