One of these. The trace chains hooked to the hames, which were mounted on the horse's collar and then to each end of the single tree. The hitch in the middle of the single tree was then hitched to the plow or whatever implement was to be pulled. Or, if two horses were to be used the single tree was hooked to a double tree which allowed two horses to be hitched to the same plow. What he found was the steel loops on the ends. Obviously, the wooden part had rotted away.
