SW Wisconsin | My marketing plan for 3 decades is an off farm job that provides a reliable income and retirement. My wife has one also.
I put my grain in the bins, dry it, and market it when it is profitable, then I sell. Some years the grain does not make much money, but I usually am able to show a profit.
I am afflicted with a disease called "Farmer". It is difficult to cure. It can lead to raising hogs, milking cows and having a brooder herd on top of the other full time endeavors.
This year the "owned" ground will still make some money. The rented ground will present a challenge.
Back in the late 70's our family banker told me not to rely on farming for my sole income. I am glad I didn't.
I hate being negative. I have had many young guys want to rent my barn to milk cows the last 8 years. I sit in the kitchen and do the math. It is a non starter. I wish there was a brighter future for the next generation of wanna be farmers in this nation. | |
